Following earlier allegations from the EU that its agreements with third countries would not apply to the UK during the post-Brexit transition period, the UK government issued a technical note in February 2018 proposing continued implementation of EU international agreements in the UK during the transition period, with the agreement of all parties involved. At the European Council in March 2018, the EU agreed to inform other parties to international agreements that the UK would be treated as a member state for the purposes of these agreements during the transition period. However, this would be a requirement and the third countries concerned may not agree. The fourth EU Implementation Report (other languages), published in November 2020 and preceded by the preface by DG Commerce Director-General Sabine Weyand (other languages), provides an overview of the results achieved in 2019 and the remarkable work for the EU`s 36 main preferential trade agreements. The accompanying staff working document provides detailed information in accordance with the trade agreement and trading partners. In addition to the EFTA agreement and the free trade agreement with the European Union, Switzerland currently has a network of 30 free trade agreements with 40 partners outside the EU and new agreements are being negotiated. One study showed that eu trade agreements implemented during the 1993-2013 period “reduced quality-adjusted prices by almost 7%.” About a quarter of the EU`s international agreements have been considered joint agreements in that they cover the shared powers between the EU and the Member States. This means that they have been ratified separately by EU member states and approved at EU level. While the agreements only apply to the EU after the EU withdrawal, some legal experts have suggested that aspects of the mixed agreements could continue to apply. However, the EU said that all agreements would no longer apply.
